El portafolio de productos de Aluminaworld atiende seis áreas principales de aplicación industrial. La siguiente sección explica cada aplicación, el grado de producto recomendado, los objetivos de rendimiento típicos y los errores de especificación más comunes que los compradores deben evitar.
Compressed air systems use desiccant dryers to remove moisture before the air reaches sensitive equipment. Two dryer types dominate the market: heatless twin-tower dryers, which use pressure swing adsorption, and heated-purge dryers, which use temperature swing adsorption. Heatless dryers typically use 4A molecular sieve in 1.6 to 2.5 mm bead grade, while heated-purge dryers often use activated alumina 3 to 5 mm beads. The target outlet specification is a pressure dew point of -40 degrees Celsius for general industrial air, or -70 degrees Celsius for instrument air and pharmaceutical applications.
Pipeline natural gas must be dried to a water content below 7 pounds per million standard cubic feet to prevent hydrate formation in the pipeline. LNG plants require even tighter drying, typically 0.1 ppm or lower, to prevent freezing in the cryogenic heat exchangers. The standard product for pipeline dehydration is 4A molecular sieve in 3 to 5 mm or 4 to 6 mm bead grade. For LNG pre-treatment, 4A is used as the primary bed and 3A as a polishing layer to reach the sub-ppm water specification.
Communities with naturally high fluoride concentration in groundwater (above 1.5 mg per liter) use activated alumina adsorption to bring the concentration down to the WHO guideline value of 1.0 mg per liter. Standard operating conditions for community-scale defluoridation plants are 5 to 8 Empty Bed Contact Time (EBCT) minutes, with the bed designed for 2,000 to 3,000 bed volumes before regeneration. Activated alumina in 0.5 to 1.0 mm or 1 to 2 mm particle size is the standard product.
Power transformers use a breather to protect the insulating oil from moisture contamination. The breather contains activated alumina in 3 to 5 mm or 4 to 6 mm bead grade, which adsorbs water vapor from the air that enters the transformer as the oil expands and contracts with temperature. The standard breather holds 1 to 3 kg of activated alumina and requires replacement every 1 to 3 years depending on the climate and the transformer duty cycle.
Aluminum Hydroxide (ATH) is the dominant flame retardant filler for Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) cable compounds. When exposed to fire, ATH decomposes endothermically at 200 to 300 degrees Celsius, releasing water vapor that cools the polymer and dilutes combustible gases. Typical ATH loading in LSZH compounds is 60 to 180 parts per hundred resin (phr), depending on the fire performance requirement (IEC 60332-1, IEC 60332-3, or UL 1685). Surface-treated ATH grades with silane or stearic acid coating are used to improve dispersion and reduce viscosity in the polymer melt.
Activated alumina and pseudo-boehmite are widely used as catalyst carriers in petrochemical processes. The Claus process for sulfur recovery uses activated alumina 2 to 5 mm beads as the support for the activated alumina catalyst that converts H2S to elemental sulfur. Hydrogen peroxide production uses pseudo-boehmite as the carrier for palladium catalyst. Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) uses spray-dried microspheroidal alumina as part of the catalyst matrix. The choice between activated alumina and pseudo-boehmite depends on the pore structure required for the specific catalyst.
Refrigerant gases (R-134a, R-410A, R-32) and organic liquids (ethanol, isopropanol, acetone) require moisture control to prevent corrosion, freeze-out, and side reactions. Molecular sieve 3A is the standard product for these applications because the 3 angstrom pore excludes the refrigerant or solvent molecules while admitting water. Typical use is a small packed bed or in-line filter cartridge, with sieve replacement triggered by pressure drop or outlet moisture exceeding 10 ppm.
Alumina powder (calcined alpha-Al2O3) is used in three main downstream applications. In ceramic glaze, it improves hardness, thermal shock resistance, and chemical durability. In paint and coating, it serves as an abrasion-resistant filler for anti-slip and high-traffic floor coatings. In precision polishing, fine alpha-alumina powder (0.3 to 5 micron) is used for sapphire, silicon wafer, and optical lens finishing. The choice of alumina grade depends on the target application: 325 mesh for paint, 1000 to 2000 mesh for polishing, and various micron grades for ceramic glaze.
